Prince Foundation Underscores Vital Role of Public-Private Partnership in Mine Action at Geneva Convention

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – In a notable demonstration of effective collaboration, the Cambodian public and private sectors have set a gold standard for working together on mine clearance. At the recent Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Holding Group, represented by its philanthropic arm Prince Foundation, highlighted its significant role in this partnership. Gabriel Tan, Chief Communications Officer of Prince Holding Group and Head of Prince Foundation, addressed international leaders and policymakers, emphasizing the crucial role of private sector engagement in eradicating landmines and fostering sustainable development.

The Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, also known as the Ottawa Treaty, is an international legal instrument that prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of anti-personnel mines. A United Nations-facilitated forum, 164 countries have currently committed to the treaty.

The convention brought together international leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the ongoing challenges and advancements in mine action. For the first time, representatives from private companies that have contributed to humanitarian demining participated in this platform, making a significant impact. Mr. Tan’s participation underscored Prince Foundation’s dedication to supporting demining efforts, particularly in Cambodia, where landmines continue to impact communities and hinder development.

In his remarks, H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister, First Vice-President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), and President of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, said, “The contribution of the private sector to humanitarian mine action will greatly assist in resolving the global mine crisis and accelerate the journey to a mine-free world. Landmines continue to threaten lives, disrupt livelihoods, and impede socio-economic development, which is a major obstacle to sustainable peace around the world.”

“Despite the remarkable progress made through international treaties and demining initiatives, challenges remain and require joint efforts in all areas,” Senior Minister Ly Thuch added.

Prince Foundation has been actively involved in several demining and victim assistance projects. From participating in the High-Level Dialogue on Mine Action in Siem Reap to sponsoring the Malaysian Business Chamber of Commerce (MBCC) Charity Gala Dinner, which supported demining in Kampong Speu province, the Foundation has continually demonstrated its commitment. Notably, Prince Foundation collaborated with UNDP Cambodia to produce a video featuring a message from former James Bond actor Daniel Craig, commemorating the 30th anniversary of demining efforts in Cambodia.

The MBCC has also played a pivotal role in raising funds and awareness to help Cambodia achieve its goal of becoming a mine-free nation. Together with other partners, MBCC launched the campaign “One Person – 4000 Riel,” the amount needed to clear a five-square-meter patch of contaminated land. Through its donations, it helped clear landmines and other UXOs in Sdok commune and three villages in Srang commune in Kampong Speu province.

Similarly, the Textile, Apparel, Footwear & Travel Goods Association in Cambodia (TAFTAC), with support from the Cambodia Garment Training Institute (CGTI), has been instrumental in providing training and skill development to improve the lives of victims and their families. This initiative enhances their ability to integrate into the workforce and contribute to the country’s development. In 2023, with support from TAFTAC members, a donation of $240,000 was raised to support demining efforts in eight minefields at Koh Sdach commune in Koh Kong province’s Kirisakor district. As a result, the area was declared mine-free that same year.

“TAFTAC is honored to partner with the government’s efforts, through the CMAA, to achieve a landmine-free Cambodia. This initiative highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in reaching such critical goals. We are dedicated to the socio-economic development of Cambodia, working towards a brighter future for all,” said Mr. Albert Tan, Deputy Chairman of TAFTAC.

Prince Foundation’s support extends beyond demining. From September 2022 to September 2023, the Foundation supported the Cambodian Wheelchair Basketball Federation. This initiative highlighted the positive impact of assistance to victims of hazardous explosives and physical disabilities. The Cambodian women’s wheelchair basketball team’s historic achievements at the 2023 ASEAN Para Games, where they secured a gold and a silver medal, underscored the importance of adaptive sports and platforms for athletes with disabilities.

During the convention, Mr. Tan spotlighted the Cambodian model of public and private sector collaboration in mine action as a prime example of effective partnerships. He stressed the critical need for robust alliances with humanitarian organizations to seamlessly integrate demining efforts with broader peacebuilding and development goals. “Building stronger ties between the private sector and humanitarian organizations ensures the holistic integration of demining with a broader peacebuilding and development agenda,” Mr. Tan stated.

“The collaboration between CMAA and private entities like Prince Foundation, the MBCC, and TAFTAC demonstrates the potential of combined efforts. Our joint initiatives not only work towards a mine-free Cambodia but also drive innovation and provide sustainable support for social welfare,” Mr. Tan added.

Collaboration between the private sector and humanitarian organizations can be strengthened through comprehensive strategies that include joint planning and goal setting, shared resources and expertise, and integrated programs combining demining with other humanitarian and development initiatives. Regular communication and coordination are essential to align efforts, and conducting joint impact evaluations and reporting can measure success and identify areas for improvement.

As the global community continues to strive for a mine-free world, contributions from the private sector play an indispensable role in accelerating this journey. Prince Foundation remains committed to driving innovation and creating sustainable support for demining and social welfare initiatives, reinforcing the collective endeavor to achieve a mine-free world.

Prince Manor Resort, under the astute business acumen of Chairman Chen Zhi, is not just a premier destination for leisure but also a beacon of sustainable development, setting a compelling example for others to follow.

The resort, known for its luxurious facilities and family-friendly attractions, hosted the students for a day of relaxation and adventure. It features a wide range of activities, including large water parks, a go-kart track, eco-agricultural parks, and the tallest Ferris wheel in Cambodia, the ‘Phnom Penh Eye.’ The resort provided the students with a much-needed break from their daily routines and inspired them to embrace new experiences, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in their daily lives.

“We are delighted to partner with Happy Chandara Student Home and offer these young students a day of fun and excitement at Prince Manor Resort,” said Mr. Gabriel Tan, Head of Prince Foundation. “Education is a cornerstone of our foundation’s mission, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that provide educational opportunities and improve the quality of life for children in Cambodia.”

Prince Foundation, established by its founder and chairman, Neak Oknha Chen Zhi, remains dedicated to its mission of making a positive impact on the lives of children and communities in Cambodia through various philanthropic initiatives. “The increasingly complex skillsets and mindsets required by the Industrial Revolution 4.0 mean students cannot just rely on strong academic results,” said Gabriel Tan, Chief Communications Officer of Prince Holding Group. “Life-long learning, critical thinking and personal finance skills are increasingly important for university students seeking to secure a good future, and Prince Foundation is pleased to work with Grow4Growth to ensure our scholars are suitably prepared for their future.”

“People capacity development is our mission and we are honored to work with Prince Foundation and the Chen Zhi scholars who have amply demonstrated their passion and potential during the workshops,” said Ms. Kim Tol Tan, Founder & CEO of Grow4Growth Consultant. “We are honored to play our part in shaping the bright futures of these young Cambodians.”

A flagship programme of Prince Foundation (the philanthropic arm of Prince Holding Group), the Chen Zhi Scholarship (named after Neak Oknha Chen Zhi, Chairman of Prince Group) aims to provide both academic support and work experience for students by ensuring they receive a quality education as well as exposure to international work practices.

2,000 Students Learn About Future Opportunities at Career Fair Organized by Caring For Cambodia

Prince Foundation & Chen Zhi Scholars Take Part

About 2,000 high school students from two high schools in Siem Reap learnt about future prospects and received valuable counsel from different experienced work professionals in a career fair organized by Caring for Cambodia (CFC). The career fair is one of the many events organized by CFC in Career Preparation Program to help high school students secure the right opportunities.

Prince Foundation was one of the corporates participating in the Career Fair event with representatives manning a booth titled “Achieve your dreams with Prince Group” where interested students learnt about the seven main business units and career opportunities within Prince Group at Prasat Bakong High School, Aranh Sakor Cuthbert Primary and Junior High School.

14 scholarship recipients who earlier received the Chen Zhi Scholarship also volunteered and helped design the content and the booth to assist fellow Cambodian youth looking for better career opportunities.

“A career fair is an important way for students to network and gain information firsthand and make informed decisions over their future,” said Rebecca Large, Deputy Country Director at Caring for Cambodia. “We are pleased to have organized a career fair that has seen the largest ever turnout in recent years and we hope it inspires Cambodian students to dare to dream bigger.”

“The pandemic has undoubtedly redefined the learning environment and the types of careers that high school students and university graduates will need to consider,” said Gabriel Tan, Chief Communications Officer of Prince Holding Group. “With the career fair, we hope students received the information they need at a vital juncture to enhance their competitiveness in the workplace.”

Launched in 2006, the Career Preparation program helps more than 3,000 students every year. Students graduating from Caring for Cambodia schools are 18 times more likely to enroll in universities compared to the national average.

Women Powering Towards A Mine-Free Future for Cambodia, Prince Foundation Learns

Women are playing crucial roles as Cambodia envision a future free of landmines, representatives of Prince Foundation learned during a field visit to Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces of Cambodia.

By 2025, Cambodia aims to end the threat of injuries caused by landmines left behind due to past wars. Cambodia has cleared 2,379 km2 of landmine and ERW contaminated land since 1992, with about 2,000 km2 left.

On July 6, Prince Foundation, Chairman Chen Zhi participated in the “Women’s Power in Mine Action” minefield visit organized by Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) and The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, alongside with the Embassy of India in Cambodia, and the American Chamber of Commerce in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat.

His Excellency Senior Minister Ly Thuch, the First Vice President of Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), and the newly appointed President of the Cambodia Wheelchair Basketball Federation (CWBF) introduced the delegation to the female mine clearers known as deminers.

The representatives found out how Cambodian women learn complex demining and clearance skills and use them in the field. The Foundation vowed to do its part to help raise awareness across member companies and among other stakeholders through producing call to action and deminers’ interview videos.

Neak Oknha Chen Zhi, Chairman of Prince Holding Group, one of the largest and fastest-growing conglomerates in Cambodia, visited students of Prince Horology Vocational Training Center undergoing training in the art of Swiss watchmaking.

The 6 Cambodians students, currently under full scholarships and stipend, are set to graduate as the first watchmakers in Cambodia who can repair and assemble watches to Swiss standards – considered widely as the benchmark in the world of luxury watches.

Chen Zhi has paid keen attention to the institute in his personal capacity, supported through Prince Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Group. The center forms a key linchpin of the Group’s broader efforts to elevate education across Cambodia via scholarship programmes, thought leadership trainings, and other CSR initiatives.

“Three years back, this was just a vision,” shares Chen Zhi. “I am impressed with the progress that has been made since we founded the school before the start of the pandemic and I look forward to see the birth of Cambodia’s first-ever watchmakers trained to Swiss standards.”
